Aside from being a session drummer, Dan is a teacher in schools, privately and also sometimes works with a Youth Orchestra tutoring the percussion section. He currently has students from the age of 7 right through to 18 and also works in a specialist school for children with learning difficulties.

Dan teaches students to read music from the very beginning. Some of the things he covers:

  •  Rockschool/ Trinity Grades 1-8
  • Orchestral Percussion and reading
  • Rudiments - From Paradiddles to Swiss Army Triplets and their relevance in music and technique
  • Improvisation - Fills, Solos, Jazz Improvisation
  • World music - Multiple genres from around the world
  • Playalong tracks/ Click Tracks Students can bring in requests, or I will choose pieces for them, from Classic Rock tracks to Jazz standards to Military Snare Drumming

Aside from the above, Dan regularly plays the piano or guitar as a teaching aid to give his students an experience of ensemble playing and to develop their listening skills.

TEACHING

" Dan is an exceptional instrumental teacher who has revitalised percussion in our school. In the last five years we have seen the development of an amazing 'drum corps' and a percussion ensemble, and some of his students are seriously considering studying music at music college or university - first study percussion."
